This post is in response to some comments on the Body Exposure write up. So today I’m going to touch on the journey to health through detoxification.
The best way to release toxins is to follow three phases: to cleanse, to rebuild and to maintain.
There are a variety of detoxifying programs, from the simple to the more complex. Detoxification is a normal body process of eliminating or neutralizing toxins through the colon, liver, lungs, lymph and skin. As our world becomes more polluted and chemical derived, our bodies are becoming overloaded; thus many unwanted substances stay in our tissues. Our bodies try to help out by surrounding it with mucous or fat so it won’t cause imbalance or trigger an immune reaction. You can actually be carrying around an additional 15 pounds of mucous that harbors this waste. The ideas presented in this ‘Journey to Health’ are what I have chosen to do over the many years of counseling clients. I do not recommend embarking on a detoxification program or fast without medical guidance.
The first phase is to eliminate toxins. Cleaning out mucous and toxins from the intestinal tract and major organs. Everything functions more efficiently when toxins, obstructions and wastes are removed. A huge help in this process is to drink a minimum of 8 glasses of water to help flush the body so toxins are not reabsorbed into the blood stream.
The second phase is rebuilding healthy tissue and restoring energy. During this time the body has successfully removed the obstacles (mucous, toxins) that can be harmful. The rebuild program should be three times as long as the detox program because the body continues to cleanse and rebuild for sometime after the initial detox phase. Eat only fresh and simply prepared foods during this phase. You should eat only good fats, little dairy (kefir) and no fried foods. Avoid stimulants such as: alcohol, caffeine, tobacco and sugars.
The third phase is to modify lifestyle habits so the a body can stay clean and toxin free. Some of the these lifestyle habits can be modifying your diet by eating organic foods, incorporating daily exercise, doing daily breath-work, increasing intake of fiber, introducing probiotics and enzymes to your supplementation, increasing your water intake and becoming conscious of your environmental toxins, so start eliminating them.
The definition of a toxin is “poisonous substances”. Internal toxins consist of waste products (proteins, fats, carbs) that were not properly broken down by the digestive system. External toxins include household chemicals, pharmaceutical drugs, caffeine and recreational drugs. All of this is especially hard on the liver (master filter) which can be bombarded with too much and eventually shut down. This can lead to a path of physical, emotional, and spiritual illness.
Do you need to detox? Are you ready to detox?
Do you feel congested from eating too much food or the wrong kinds of food?
Do you experience digestive problems ( constipation, nausea/vomiting, water retention, frequent urination, boating/ abdominal discomfort, belching or gas after eating, foul smelling bowel movements)?
Do you want to streamline your body processes for more energy?
Do you feel tired in the morning or during the day, even after a good nights rest?
Do you need to assist weight loss? Do you have dark circles or bags under eyes, coating on tongue, chronic cough or sneezing fits?
Do you want to slow aging and clear your skin ( wrinkling, loose and flabby skin, dull colored skin)?
Do you want to improve your eating habits( still consuming fast food, sweets, caffeine products, fried foods and white flour products)?
Do you want to improve your flexibility? Do you experience aching or painful joints?
Do you want to improved your mental and emotional functioning ( confusion, excessive anger, memory lapses, depression, negative outlook)?
Do you need to remove toxins causing a health problem?
If you answered YES to more than three questions there is a good chance you need to detox.
There is no doubt in my mind we have wonderfully equipped bodies designed to detect and process potentially hazardous materials and substances. The body has seven channels of elimination: the blood, the lymphatic system, and five organs the colon, the kidneys, the lungs and the liver. All have a unique role to play in getting rid of the toxic load, and all must be functioning optimally for proper detoxification to happen.
Lungs: they release toxins with every exhalation, mainly carbon dioxide, a by-product of respiration. As this muscle contracts, it moves lymph and blood which also carry toxins.
Liver: a major organ in elimination, the liver serves as the master filter for the entire detoxification process. A toxic liver contributes to chronic fatigue, IBS, high blood pressure, etc.
Colon: the final place where waste travels to be eliminated. You should have at least one bowel elimination a day so toxic waste doesn’t get reabsorbed back into the bllod stream.
Kidneys: The kidneys filter out water-soluble wastes from the blood that flows to them from the liver. These wastes are stored in the bladder before elimination through the urine.
Skin: a protective layer that keeps toxins from entering the body, it actually eliminates more cellular waste than the colon and the kidneys combined. Thats why dry skin brushing is so crucial because it takes off the dead skin cells and uric acid that carry toxins and your perspiration carries the ‘dirty water’ out of the body.
Blood: moves through the cardiovascular system bringing nutrients and oxygen to the cells and flushing away waste products and toxins.
Lymph: a clear fluid with immune cells called lymphocytes which move around the body in a series of vessels that parallel the veins. Lymph delivers nutrients as well as collects waste and helps destroy pathogens. The Lymph relies on exercise to move this fluid because it does not have a natural pump like the blood (heart). So if you lead a sedentary lifestyle you could have stagnant lymph (swollen nodes), which means toxins are not being eliminated. Rebounding is an exercise that provides the natural pumping motion and can be performed inside or outdoors.
So rememberwe have a remarkable ability to stay nourished and detoxified, except when we become clogged due to toxic overload and poor diet. To improve the elimination channels we must do a comprehensive detoxification program at least once a year, if not 2x a year!
